Woman Gives Cat a Chance While Others Say He's 'Not Worth It', a Month After Rescue...

In the latter part of June, an undernourished stray feline was discovered in an alleyway and brought to a high-risk animal shelter, facing an uncertain future. Rachel Brown recalls, “Two days later, I spotted his profile on the shelter’s website and instantly knew that I had to bring him home.”

His profile indicated he was dehydrated, extremely thin, and suffering from a serious upper respiratory infection. Upon visiting the cat at the shelter, the owner cautioned Rachel about the costly treatment the cat would require due to his critical condition, and even dissuaded her from adoption, suggesting it was not worth it.

Rachel was unwavering in her decision and told the owner she would return the following day to take the cat home. On June 26th, she rescued the kitty from the shelter and rushed him to the nearest 24-hour emergency veterinarian.

Upon arriving, I immediately presented the cat to the medical team, and they quickly began attending to him. After running some tests, they confirmed that he had tested positive for coronavirus. They then proceeded to remove some of his matted fur, clean his face thoroughly, and discovered that he weighed 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs) and was estimated to be around 1-2 years old. The poor cat had ulcers in his mouth and was suffering from inflammation all over his body.

The veterinarian then took me aside and informed me that due to the seriousness of his condition, the cat might not survive and the decision was ultimately up to me. Determined to give him a fighting chance, I was resolved to do everything I could to save him.

“I made the decision to have him treated, so I admitted him to the hospital. He stayed there for 5 days, which was a bit of a trek – a 30-minute train ride from my place. Despite the distance, I made sure to visit him every day after finishing work.

By the second day, he was still weak but his condition was stable. While he hadn’t touched his food, at least the IV wasn’t making him sick anymore. It wasn’t until the third day that he finally started to eat. I remember standing by his enclosure, encouraging him with a simple ‘eat Jon’. He hesitated at first, sniffing the food cautiously before deciding to dig in. It was such a heartwarming moment, seeing him finally eat again. Just the best feeling in the world.”

“After just four days, Jon Snow Kitty was already running around and investigating every corner of the exam room. By the fifth day, his blood was tested again, and the results showed that his levels were back to normal.”
The veterinarians were amazed at how quickly Jon’s health had improved. Rachel had a strong feeling from the beginning that he would overcome the odds, and she was right.

“By the sixth day, I was able to bring Jon home with me. I started treating his upset stomach and upper respiratory infection with medication, as well as giving him eye drops for bacteria and steroids, applying anti-fungal cream to his face where his fur was missing, and providing him with liver supplements.”
The vet was amazed at how much progress Jon had made during each follow-up visit.

Following multiple weeks of medical care and trips to the veterinarian, his ailment disappeared completely.

“During his follow-up appointment a week later, the veterinarian confirmed Jon’s good health, mentioning that he only required liver supplements every second day.”

Rachel expressed how she has witnessed Jon continuously progress and how he’s truly a miraculous little feline. His favorite pastimes include playing with toys and boxes, enjoying his meals and staying hydrated. Surprisingly, he didn’t even require any litter box training.

“My furry companion Jon Snow enjoys keeping me company as he wanders around my home. He cuddles with me in bed, sometimes perching on my head like a fluffy crown.

He adores belly rubs and isn’t shy about asking for them, resembling a playful puppy. Jon Snow communicates with me through cute chirps, making our conversations truly delightful.”

“In just six weeks, he has doubled his weight from 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs) to 3 kg (6.6 lbs. He gets super energetic at sunset and enjoys running around like crazy. His tangled fur was completely shaved, but now it’s slowly growing back.”

After six weeks had passed…
Everyone doubted whether this little cat could make it, but Rachel had faith that all he needed was another opportunity, and now he is flourishing thanks to the affection he receives.
