The Journey of a Lone Stray: A Gentle Cat’s Path to Finding a Home

Shrek, a sweet and lovable cat, was discovered in a feral cat colony where he faced bullying from other cats. Emily Shields, the caring founder of Whiskers N Wishes Sanctuary in Marana, Arizona, took him in and named him Shrek for his resemblance to the famous ogre character.
Thanks to Emily’s care, Shrek received the treatment he needed for his health issues. He was eventually adopted by a kind couple from New York, where he now enjoys a comfortable life as a pampered house cat. Shrek’s unique appearance and heartwarming story have captured the hearts of many on the internet. You can follow Shrek’s adventures on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook.

Bored Panda recently spoke with Emily, the founder of Whiskers N Wishes, a cat sanctuary in Tucson. Emily fulfilled her childhood dream of running a cat rescue by purchasing land during the pandemic. In just three years, they have successfully found forever homes for 377 cats.

Whiskers N Wishes officially opened in November 2020, after Emily posted an ad on CraigsList offering to take in cats when shelters were closed due to COVID-19. The overwhelming response led her to purchase a property to expand the rescue, which has continued to grow with new expansions every six months.

Emily shared that the sanctuary is in need of donations for vet bills and expansions, as they care for senior, disabled, and cats with health conditions. They also require basic supplies like food and litter, especially specialized diets for cats with ailments. Despite the challenges, Emily expressed her desire to increase their capacity to care for even more cats in the future.

Shrek was a part of a colony of cats near an airport in Tucson, where he faced bullying from the other cats. Thankfully, Courtney from Poets Square Cats, a popular TikTok account with over a million followers, found him and reached out to Emily. Emily, who was watching a movie, Teenage Kraken, with her kids at the time, received a text from Courtney asking if they could take in a friendly tomcat who was in need of help.

Describing Shrek’s condition, Emily explained that he looked rough and was not getting enough food due to the bullying he faced from the other cats. His eyes were also in a bad state – goopy and gross. Additionally, like many male street cats, Shrek tested positive for FIV. Despite his messy appearance, Shrek’s story of resilience and survival is truly touching.
