“The Evolution of a Misfit Cat: A Tale of Transformation from Wild to Domestic”

Meet Shrek, a lovable feline who found himself in a feral cat colony, where he faced bullying from other cats. Poor Shrek was undernourished, scarred from fights, and partially blind due to a condition called entropion. Thankfully, Emily Shields of Whiskers N Wishes Sanctuary in Marana, Arizona, came to his rescue.

Impressed by his resemblance to the famous ogre character from an animated movie, Emily named him Shrek. With proper care and treatment, Shrek’s health improved, and he eventually found a forever home with a couple from New York. Now, Shrek enjoys a pampered life as a house cat, far from his rough beginnings in the cat colony.

Emily, the founder of Whiskers N Wishes, had a lifelong dream of running a cat rescue. She took the leap and opened her sanctuary in November 2020 after receiving an overwhelming response to her ad on CraigsList during the pandemic. Since then, they have successfully facilitated 377 adoptions in just 3 years.

The sanctuary faces financial challenges, especially with mounting vet bills totaling $43,000 in 2023. They specialize in caring for senior, disabled, and Felv/Fiv cats, some of which require specialized diets and treatments. Emily emphasized the need for donations to support expansions and cover basic necessities like food and litter.

At the moment, Whiskers N Wishes can care for 40-45 cats at a time, but they aspire to increase this capacity through ongoing expansions. Emily expressed gratitude for any support, whether it be through donations or purchasing items from their Amazon and Chewy wish lists. With the community’s help, she aims to continue providing a safe haven for cats in need.

We were interested in learning more about the start of Shrek’s journey and how he was discovered. Shrek was living among a group of cats near an airport in Tucson, where he faced bullying as an outsider. Courtney from Poets Square Cats, a popular TikTok account with over a million followers, came across him. Emily, who was watching a movie with her kids when Courtney reached out, shared, “Courtney messaged me during a movie, asking if we could take in a friendly tomcat who was being mistreated.”
Emily reflected on Shrek’s condition at the time, saying, “Shrek appeared quite ragged. He struggled to eat due to the dominance of the other cats, and his eyes were in a disheveled state. Being FIV positive, a common occurrence in male stray cats, he was in rough shape.”

Emily detailed the urgency of the situation, explaining, “Shrek had entropion, a condition where the eyelids turn inward, causing the eyelashes to irritate the eyes. It was painful for him and affected his vision. After being neutered and receiving his vaccinations, he had to undergo eye surgery and dental surgery as well,” described Emily.
