Curious to learn more about the fabulous feline and her adventures, I reached out to Martina Gutfreund, Suki’s owner, to share some insights into the dynamic duo’s escapades.

I’d love to share a bit about myself and my feline companion. After our previous cat crossed the rainbow bridge, my partner and I, who enjoy hiking and camping, decided it was time to welcome a new fur baby into our lives. We specifically chose a Bengal cat this time because of their high energy levels. We wanted a feline companion who could join us on our outdoor adventures without any hesitation. Suki, our chosen Bengal kitten, seemed like the perfect match for our active lifestyle.

How does Suki act during a walk?

Suki absolutely adores walking along narrow paths and boardwalks. However, we often have to set out early to avoid encountering other hikers. Suki is a social butterfly and can’t resist greeting everyone we pass on the trail, prompting me to pick her up so we can continue on our way. It’s a behavior we’re working on training her out of, but she’s still just a kitten… so we remain optimistic! 🙂

What drives you the most to embark on hiking trips with your feline companion? Bringing Suki along on our escapades is an absolute blast, and she’s a breeze to bring along! It’s refreshing to challenge the typical stereotypes associated with cats, as she’s adept at walking on a leash, enjoys car rides, embraces camping, paddles in a canoe, revels in water, tackles hikes, and partakes in just about every activity that a dog would. It’s heartwarming to witness how many individuals desire to include their cats in their travels, despite the puzzled looks and occasional negative remarks. Cats are truly capable of much more than they often get credit for! 🙂

Do you have a go-to spot that you absolutely love? What is it about that place that makes it so special to you?
Our usual trips take us around Alberta and occasionally to British Columbia. Our typical activities involve quick hikes, paddling in canoes, and spending nights camping. One of Suki’s most treasured hikes was at Johnston Canyon in Banff, Alberta. The trail mostly consists of elevated boardwalks hugging the cliffs above a roaring river in the canyon below – it’s like her own little piece of heaven. We’re hoping to bring her along on our European adventure this spring if we manage to save up enough for the trip by then!

Are there any not-so-obvious items we should bring for our trail adventure? One crucial lesson I quickly discovered is that my cat refuses to drink water while we’re hiking. This can be risky, especially on long or hot days. To solve this, I always pack a can of wet food and a small bowl. I mix a small amount of food with around 2 ounces of water, and voila! She laps it right up. While not every cat may be the same, this trick could be a helpful solution for those feline friends who are picky about staying hydrated on the trail.

How do you make sure your active cat stays busy when you’re not out exploring the great outdoors? When we’re not on our outdoor adventures, I make sure to take Suki for daily walks to help burn off some of her excess energy. Living so close to the forest is a blessing as I can easily tell when she’s getting a bit too rambunctious and needs to stretch her legs. We started taking Suki outside just one month after bringing her home for the first time, and she took to it like a champ – she’s now 7 months old and loves her daily walks.
