Mochi, a munchkin cat originally bred in China, was unfortunately affected by ischemic dermatopathy. This condition caused her to experience the deterioration of some of her body parts, including her ears, tail, and right hind leg. Despite this setback, Mochi was given a chance at a new life with a family in Boston. However, her health issues proved too much for them, and she was surrendered to the MSPCA-Angell rescue shelter.
Thankfully, Mochi’s story doesn’t end there. A couple named Greg and Natalia fell in love with her despite her unconventional appearance and decided to take her in as their first pet together. They have fully embraced Mochi, giving her the love and care she deserves.
In a recent interview with Bored Panda, Greg McDouglas shared the heartwarming story of Mochi, his beloved cat. Mochi’s journey began in China where she was bred and born as a munchkin kitten. She was later sold to a family in Boston but soon fell ill with a mysterious disease that caused necrosis. As a result, she was surrendered to MSPCA-Angell, a rescue shelter where her condition had worsened significantly. The shelter had no choice but to amputate one of her hind legs, both ears, and her tail, while she also suffered from ringworm. Despite these obstacles, Mochi has found a loving home with Greg and is thriving under his care.
The MSPCA-Angell rescue center received custody of her after her former owners gave her up. The facility was able to provide the necessary medical care for her.
Mochi had received extensive medical care from the shelter’s doctors for a period of two months and made an impressive recovery. In order to keep her safe, she was placed in quarantine during her treatment. The doctors were able to provide the necessary care for her to regain full health. After her successful recuperation, the shelter advertised her for adoption. Luckily, my fiancรฉe Natalia, an animal lover, saw the listing and was immediately smitten. The following day, we received word from the shelter that we had been selected to adopt Mochi. Initially, I tried to remain composed and suggested we meet her first. However, when we finally met her on January 22nd, 2023, we both fell in love with her and decided to bring her home. Sadly, due to the severity of her condition, Mochi had to undergo surgery to amputate one of her hind legs, both ears, and her tail. Despite this, Mochi has been a cherished member of our family for over two months, and we are grateful for the joy she brings to our lives.
The medical professionals employed at the shelter cared for her for a total of two months. During this time, she was isolated from the rest of the residents.
Having gained insight into Mochi’s adoption tale, we were curious to uncover more about her character and regimen in her newfound abode. According to Greg, Mochi is an exceedingly amiable and energetic feline who takes pleasure in engaging in recreational activities such as hide and seek. She expresses herself vocally with her owners through meows, chirps, and squeaks. Mochi is affectionate and revels in being pampered with belly rubs, head scratches, and sleeping atop Natalia’s cranium at night. She has a penchant for attention and relishes meeting new acquaintances while readily embracing novel experiences. Greg and Natalia are enamored with Mochi, spoiling her with copious amounts of love. Choosing to adopt Mochi has undoubtedly been one of their happiest decisions, and she brings them immeasurable joy.
Once she had received adequate attention and recuperation, the shelter went ahead with preparations for her adoption.
When questioned about Mochi’s condition, Greg responded with a mix of positivity and caution. He is optimistic that Mochi will lead a long, joyful, and robust life, but they need to be mindful of her. Following a suspected vaccine reaction during her initial illness, Mochi is unable to receive vaccinations. In addition, they must take care of her three legs and keep an eye on her weight since she enjoys eating, and they must carefully clean her ears. However, Mochi is thriving and lively, as demonstrated by her recent veterinary examination. Natalia and Greg applied for adoption as soon as they saw Mochi’s profile.
The following day, the animal shelter contacted them with exciting news – they had been chosen to adopt Mochi!
We were instantly intrigued when we learned about the cute moniker of their latest furry addition and couldn’t resist inquiring about its inspiration. According to them, Mochi’s name was derived from the likeness of a delectable vanilla mochi ice cream ball. Some people, however, thought she bore similarities to other animals such as an owl, seal, otter, cloud, potato, or even a ferret. Yet despite the varied opinions, there was no denying that Mochi was a breathtakingly beautiful creature! The couple’s affection for her deepened even further upon getting acquainted with her the next day.
We were interested in how Mochi’s medical conditions affect her daily activities, considering her past health issues. Greg shared that they take extra measures to ensure that Mochi has a calm routine to prevent any potential autoimmune reactions. Although she is unable to go outdoors, Mochi has the freedom to roam around their home and typically spends her time dozing off in their bed or a comfortable kitty bed nearby. To our surprise, Mochi tends to sleep soundly throughout the night. In the mornings, she’s full of energy and enjoys playing games with her owners after having her meals. If she’s feeling playful, she’ll meow to get their attention and try to initiate a fun game of hide-and-seek. Despite her health struggles, Mochi is an adorable and lively kitten who brings happiness to the lives of those around her.
Greg shared that their four-legged buddy has a fun and playful routine she enjoys doing. As soon as they go near her, she quickly scampers away and hides. But once they get closer, she pops out of her hiding spot to check if they’re still following her. If they continue to do so, she runs off again, repeating this game until she gets tired. Eventually, she gives in and lays on her back, waiting to be caressed while licking their hands. She delights in napping in various parts of the house and playing with the laser pointer, running up and down the stairs, and sprinting around the place. Because of her difficulty in running straight, she moves like a snake. One of her favorite pastimes is watching TV, and she happily savors her wet food.
This gentle being adores the sensation of having her belly rubbed and head scratched, exuding warmth and affection.
We asked about how to properly take care of the medically challenged cat. The owner assured us that outside of some necessary precautions, her care is quite manageable. The cat acts like any other feline and doesn’t seem bothered by her missing limbs. She even enjoys climbing furniture and snuggling with Natalia at bedtime.
When Mochi was only 8 months old, she was adopted by a loving family who couldn’t help but notice how much she looked like a delicious vanilla mochi ice cream treat.
Following the viral success of Mochi’s story, we had the pleasure of interviewing the proud owners, Greg and Natalia, about their experiences with the famous feline. Greg shared that they take pleasure in sharing Mochi’s heartwarming and inspiring tale of a determined cat that has gone through a lot. Despite losing her limbs and suffering a two-month quarantine due to illness during her journey from China, Mochi remains a cheerful and loving cat that never gives up. For Greg, she is a symbol of strength and determination, always full of vitality and zest, and he hopes that her story will bring hope and positivity to others facing adversity.
Currently, she is thriving and in a great physical state. Nevertheless, her family members should take some precautions to ensure that she remains secure and healthy.
In conclusion, Greg highlighted the importance of raising awareness for rescue shelters that do a commendable job of taking care of animals in need, like MSPCA-Angell which played a significant role in Mochi’s recovery. He encouraged individuals to support these organizations and consider adopting disabled animals, pointing out the numerous exceptional and distinct creatures that are eagerly waiting for a loving family. Meanwhile, one of Mochi’s caretakers was spotted cleaning the remaining debris from her ears.
It’s a bit of a struggle for her to run in a straight line, so she tends to move in a sideways motion that’s similar to the way a snake slithers.
Apart from that, she behaves like any ordinary cat, relishing in the game of climbing the couch, chairs, and beds.
When Mochi wants to have some fun, she uses her meows and playful movements to get her owner’s attention and involve them in her activities.
Moreover, she enjoys spending quality time watching television with Natalia and Greg as a form of relaxation.
Greg and Natalia are excited to spread awareness about the selfless efforts of rescue shelters like MSPCA-Angell, which work tirelessly to provide assistance and comfort for animals in distress. They have a personal connection to this cause, as their beloved pet, Mochi, was cared for with compassion by this organization. Their goal is to highlight the exceptional work of these shelters and encourage others to support them.
They opted to share the story of Mochi in order to encourage others to consider adopting animals with disabilities.
Taking care of our beloved pets may need extra attention and care, but the unconditional love and loyalty they provide us cannot be quantified.
Greg believes that adding Mochi to their family has been a wonderful decision as the furry companion has brought immense love and joy to their lives.
