Let me share a heartwarming tale that is sure to bring a smile to your face. Meet China, a cat who has gained quite the reputation in her neighborhood as a kleptomaniac. But don’t worry, she’s not stealing for malicious reasons, she just can’t resist taking things that catch her eye. From socks to lighters to even aluminum wire, China is on a mission to swipe anything that piques her interest.
Her owner, Monica, affectionately describes China as the mischievous feline who stole her heart back in 2013. Originally a foster kitten, China quickly charmed her way into Monica’s life and became a permanent part of the family. With a male kitten named Waffles already in the picture, China’s playful antics brought joy and laughter to their household.
For more delightful moments with China, you can follow her adventures on Instagram and TikTok. Get ready to be entertained by this furry thief who always manages to keep things interesting!
“It all started when she was just 2-3 years old, with my roommate’s clean socks. One day, while we were lounging on the couch, we heard her making strange meows. Curious, we slowly approached the source of the noise and caught her in the act of dropping the sock by my door. It was the most hilarious sight! On another occasion, my roommate texted me a picture of all his missing socks neatly lined up by my door, explaining that he couldn’t find them before leaving for work. We couldn’t stop laughing at her antics! We even had to hide the dog poop bags because she would snatch the roll and leave a trail of unraveled bags around the apartment, leading straight to my door. China has a knack for bringing home anything people leave outside, including gloves!”

The real drama began when I moved to my current location. One day, I found a pack of cigarettes at my doorstep, assuming it belonged to a housemate. But then I discovered matches, and more items kept appearing. It dawned on me that she was actually stealing from my neighbor’s yard and bringing the loot back to me. It became a daily routine of returning the stolen items to their rightful place, only for her to bring them back with a look of confusion as if to say, “Didn’t I give you this?” It became a waiting game until the end of the day to make sure everything was returned.

Since the start of the lockdown due to the pandemic, I found myself jobless and spending all my time at home. This newfound availability has allowed me to cater to my mischievous feline’s every whim. She’s taken full advantage of the situation, roaming the neighborhood at will and stealing whatever catches her fancy, sometimes up to three or four items a day. It all began with her charming habit of bringing me her loot, meowing at my door until I acknowledge her. I soon realized she had a routine – every morning she eagerly asks to go outside, where she promptly dashes to her favorite dirt patch for a quick roll before embarking on her thieving escapades. Upon her return, she proudly presents her findings at my doorstep, demanding my attention with her loud meows. If I open the door, she prances in and devours her spoils just like a cheetah would after a successful hunt. I can’t help but chuckle at the thought of her snacking away, a true predator in domesticated form. Nothing is off-limits when she’s on the prowl.

“I thought it was hilarious, so I thought I’d set up a camera to catch it all. My friends got a kick out of it too – they couldn’t believe how sneaky she was! They started asking for more videos of her hijinks in the backyard. China is quite the character, and I knew others would find her antics entertaining too. So, I decided to start Songs Of My Felines to share her adventures with the world.” Check out all the “trophies” China has brought home from her escapades!

The owner of China was worried that the neighbors would be upset.
I was worried about how the neighbors would react since not everyone is friendly, and I didn’t want to confine my cat to my small living space. I tried to gauge their reaction, but I couldn’t keep making excuses for her. Eventually, I decided to come clean. I left a bag of their belongings along with a note explaining the situation, including my contact information for Instagram/Tiktok if they wanted to see the videos themselves. I was anxious about their response, but to my relief, my neighbor reached out and informed me that they have an indoor cat and actually enjoyed the videos. They weren’t bothered by China’s “burglary” and were just happy it wasn’t raccoons causing the mischief. I’ve now set up a return box out of China’s reach so they can retrieve their missing backyard items.

Yet, the people fully grasped and even shared a chuckle at the videos Monica was able to film.

“Basically, China is like the MVP in my household. She’s Waffles’ best buddy, always there to comfort him when his anxiety kicks in. She’s like a caring mother figure to him, helping him through all the ups and downs. China’s a mixed bag of antics – from rolling in the dirt, hunting, stealing stuff, and blatantly causing mischief. And you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way. She brings so much joy and laughter into my life every single day.”
