Encountering the World’s Elderly Feline at 26, Rescued from a Shelter

Corduroy, the mischievous senior cat, holds the title of the world’s oldest living cat according to the Guinness World Records. At the age of 26, or 121 in cat years, he shows no signs of slowing down. Despite being on a specialized diet to protect his kidneys, Corduroy still enjoys jumping onto counters and exploring the outdoors.

Originally adopted from a shelter in Oregon by his owner Reed Okura when she was only 7 years old, Corduroy is a half Maine Coon cat with a strong spirit. Reed believes that not declawing him and allowing him to roam outside has contributed to his longevity. He still has the energy to catch critters, although not as efficiently as before.

Corduroy has been a cherished companion in Reed’s life for many years, and she hopes to continue providing him with a happy and healthy life for years to come. The pair have created countless memories together, and Corduroy’s presence has become a central part of Reed’s life. It’s clear that their bond is special and enduring.

Reed observed that Corduroy doesn’t seem to act his age at all, still leaping onto counters and bounding down without a care in the world.

Each evening, he gracefully ascends the staircase and hops onto our bed to snuggle with us until the early hours of the morning when he gently rouses us at approximately 5am.

I am convinced that the reason he has lived for so long is because we chose not to declaw him and let him roam outside freely.

“He found solace in the act of hunting, using it as a way to stay sharp both physically and mentally while also being able to protect himself.”

“Corduroy may still catch critters, but he’s not as efficient as he used to be, which is a relief.”
