Ehlers-Danlos Warrior Finds Love and Happiness in Forever Home with Dedicated Humans

When Georgina Price and her fiancé Christopher Lardner decided to bring Herbie, their first rescue cat, into their home, they were already aware that his time with them was limited due to his advanced age. Unfortunately, Herbie passed away only a few months later, leaving the couple devastated despite their short time together. However, this loss ultimately led them to open their hearts to a new furry companion. For more updates, check out their Instagram page (credit: meow.af).

“I couldn’t stop thinking about the abandoned animals who only had a few months left to find a home and didn’t want them to spend that time in a shelter,” shared Georgina. “So, we made a decision to search for a unique cat that may take a bit longer to be adopted.”

While surfing the internet, Georgina came across Toby and Quinton. “We discovered them on the RSPCA website when they were in need of a new home,” Georgina shared with Bored Panda. Quinton, a 7-year-old black and white cat, had no teeth, and Toby, a 6-year-old short-haired cat, had excess loose skin. “They’re a pair who are inseparable, the RSPCA had them listed together. We thought it would be great to give a home to two lovely cats instead of just one, that way we could make a difference in their lives.”

Georgina discovered that Toby was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder known as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) or feline cutaneous asthenia (FCA), which results in abnormally elastic, loose, and delicate skin due to low collagen levels. “We were completely unaware of this condition until Toby came into our lives,” Georgina shared.

Georgina and Christopher paid a visit to the pair at the RSPCA, finding them in a designated unit. “They looked really scared, clinging to each other in the corner. Toby was so nervous he stayed hidden behind Quinton, shaking the whole time.”

It took Toby and Quinton some time to feel comfortable in their new surroundings. Georgina shared, “At first, they were really scared and stayed hidden under the bed for weeks. But with some good food and lots of love, they finally came out of their shell.” Now, they rule the roost, doing whatever they please and giving you attitude if you disturb their sleep on the bed.

Toby’s condition, characterized by delicate skin elasticity, makes him more susceptible to injuries even during everyday activities like grooming or playing with his friend Quinton. Despite this, Toby remains unfazed by his condition. The main challenge for his owners is ensuring his safety and tending to his wounds, which Toby dislikes.
Due to symptoms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Toby’s stomach hangs down to his knees, causing concern for his long-term health. Georgina and Christopher worry about the potential effects of the added weight of his excess skin, such as possible joint issues.

Georgina shared that their son’s hypermobility condition is fortunately mild and they are able to handle it without much trouble. His skin is fragile, leading to frequent tears, especially in the neck and head area.
They often scold him for scratching and cutting his nails in order to prevent any further injuries, but he seems to be independent and insists on taking care of himself.
He seeks out their dog Quinton for help in cleaning himself, as Quinton will lick his face and head, paying special attention to any cuts he may have.

Acknowledging the importance of reducing stress on Toby’s joints, his owners also make sure to discourage him from leaping onto or off of elevated surfaces. “We’re constantly reminding him not to scratch or trim his nails to minimize the risk of injury, but he always seems to have a ‘I can handle it’ attitude,” they explained. Despite the extra attention Toby needs, Georgina and Christopher are overjoyed with both Toby and his sibling Quinton.

He finds joy in watching birds, chasing bouncy balls, and cuddling with his human companions. According to Georgina, Toby adores belly rubs and will eagerly flop down next to you, giving you a look that says, “Please rub my belly.”

The woman wishes that by sharing Toby’s story, it will not only raise awareness about his unique condition but also inspire more individuals to think about welcoming special needs cats into their households. She believes that loving them doesn’t require extra effort, and despite their challenges, these animals are still stunning creatures with distinctive personalities, preferences, and the capability to reciprocate love.
