A few years back, our beloved cat Edmund passed away tragically due to a car accident, despite us residing in a peaceful rural area. Following this loss, my wife Lisa came across a cat at ‘Wrexham Cats Protection’ who had been abused and left blind. Without hesitation, we decided to bring her into our home.
This sweet cat had endured the hardships of living on the streets of Wrexham before being rescued. Her eyes were in such bad shape that they had to be surgically removed before she joined our family. Inspired by a character from the TV show Blackadder, we named her Gertrude. Initially, she was quite timid and cautious due to her past experiences.

Gertrude had such severe damage to her eyes that they had to be surgically removed before she became a part of our family.
During the initial year, our priority was to dedicate ample time with her in the bedroom, where she was adamant about not wanting to step out.
We made an effort to maintain a peaceful atmosphere around her to prevent any sudden noises that could startle her, and made sure to minimize any unnecessary movements.
She now navigates the house with more ease, but still has the occasional run-in with objects, especially during moments of stress.
She enjoys snuggling up on our laps and nuzzling her face against us, which helps her unwind and feel more at ease.
We attempt to provide her with toys to keep her entertained, however, she usually shows a preference for other types of activities to pass the time.
Gertrude enjoys spending time in the great outdoors, and we always make sure to take her out on a leash so she can have fun exploring her surroundings.
While strolling around, she often encounters fellow feline friends such as Melchett.
To my surprise, she appears to find the most pleasure in moments filled with noise, like the barking of the dog from next door or the sound of people using power tools in the vicinity.
Gertrude enjoys the peaceful melodies of the garden and is always on the lookout for some bugs to catch.
Our main goal is to reassure her that she is now in a safe environment by showering her with attention whenever she needs it. However, it will take time and patience to help her gradually unwind and feel comfortable.
If you have a cat facing similar issues, my best suggestion is to approach the situation with a lot of patience.
Gertrude may ask for a lot, but she gives back a lot of love in return, despite her past experiences with people being less than ideal.
She is currently enjoying the wonderful life that we have provided for her, and we hope that she is content in our care.
