Mendel the tiny kitten, along with his siblings, were found in a backyard without their mother at Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue in Arizona. A concerned citizen brought them in, and Kara Yancey, a foster mama at the rescue, immediately knew they needed urgent care. Despite the rescue not being open at that moment, Kara and her coworker, Jon, quickly stepped in to provide the kittens with the help they needed.

He was discovered in a backyard as a tiny newborn kitty by Kara, also known as @azkittenfostermama. After removing the annoying fleas that had plagued the kittens and tending to their injuries, they made sure to keep the little ones warm in an incubator. Kara then brought them home for non-stop feedings to ensure their survival.

Although they did everything they could to save all the kittens, unfortunately, Morgan and Watson didn’t make it. But Mendel, the only one left, showed signs of improvement overnight. This small miracle, no bigger than a palm, showed great determination to keep on living.

He managed to overcome a challenging beginning in life, Kara @azkittenfostermama shared. “With the help of antibiotics, regular baths, probiotics, and lots of love, he started eating better, gaining weight, and becoming quite chatty,” Kara revealed to Love Meow. Once his eyes were open, his meows became even more demanding during feeding times. “I’d hear my alarm go off every few hours and see his eager face peering through the incubator window, almost asking, ‘Where’s my bottle?'”

Mendel had a hearty appetite and a strong desire to grow into a big and strong kitty. In order to keep him company during his naps in the incubator, he was given a faux mama cat toy with a heartbeat. Mendel loved snuggling up to his foster mom after meals, basking in her affection.

As he grew larger and was able to move into a roomier playpen, Mendel became a little shadow, following his humans around the house and seeking their undivided attention. With each passing day, his Siamese markings became more distinct and prominent.

Mendel faced some challenges with his leg injuries that slowed him down initially, but he didn’t let that deter him. With determination and practice, he worked on improving his walk, running, and climbing just like any other kitten. Eventually, he overcame his obstacles, mastered his movements, and thrived in foster care.
