Introducing Bazooka, a charming and plump kitty with a vibrant orange coat. At five years old, Bazooka found himself at a shelter after his elderly owner passed away. Suffering from dementia, the owner often forgot when he last fed Bazooka, leading to the habit of constantly refilling his food bowl. As a result, Bazooka now tips the scales at over 35 pounds (roughly 16 kilograms)! Despite the excess weight, it’s important to remember that his previous owner cared for him as best he could, showering him with love and attention. Follow Bazooka’s adventures on social media to see more of this adorable ginger cat.

Two employees were taken aback by his large size as they carried him in. It was clear that this overweight cat needed to embark on a weight loss journey to improve his health, happiness, and be able to partake in typical cat activities.

Bazooka was on his way to a new home with a foster family who had experience in caring for animals. They would keep a close eye on his health and help him shed those pesky extra pounds. There is a heartwarming video of Bazooka attempting to climb stairs, with the encouragement and care of his foster parents, he managed to reach the top. Over time, he started to adjust to his new, healthier routine, and the weight began to come off gradually.

After Bazooka’s recovery, he was all set to join his new family. The moment his new owner laid eyes on him, she knew it was love at first sight with the charming cat. It was a heartwarming scene. In no time, Bazooka was given a new name that suited him perfectly – King Augustus, paying homage to a Roman statesman and military leader who eventually rose to become the first emperor of the Roman Empire.

When asked about how the cat is faring and if he has started shedding some pounds, she mentioned that it’s only been 2 days since he came home with them, so no weight loss yet. At his recent visit to the vet on Monday, he had actually gained a bit and weighed in at 36.4lbs. His next appointment with the vet is scheduled for February 14th.

When questioned about the most challenging aspect of looking after King Augustus, the owner jokingly replied, “The toughest part is lugging him around and getting his crate/him into the car. My arms feel like they’re going to fall off!”

Robin is a fitness enthusiast who shared her journey to staying in shape in the hopes of inspiring Augustus. She spoke about how she took up long-distance running, completing her first marathon last November. Robin decided to lose weight five years ago after being diagnosed with diabetes, shedding 127 pounds she had gained from steroid treatment for a skin condition. Thanks to her weight loss, her A1C dropped from 9 to 4.3, reversing her diabetes. She runs twice a week at 4:30 am, covering 4-5 miles each time, and logs 8-16 miles over the weekends. With a half-marathon under her belt and 30 more races lined up for the year, Robin is keen on staying active. She’s even considering getting a harness for King, her pet, to join her on walks. Let’s get moving!
According to the owner, Augustus is currently in the process of settling into his new environment as they gradually introduce him to their family, which includes their 10-pound dog. They described Augustus as a cuddly pet who enjoys belly rubs, and they are excited for the day when he feels completely at home in their household. The owner also noted that one of their favorite things about Augustus is his loud purring, comparing it to the sound of a Ford F-150 truck.

Robin shared the story of how she came to adopt Augustus, detailing how she discovered him and quickly made the decision to bring him into her home. After her beloved Maine Coon cat, Whisky, passed away in August, Robin had been feeling a void in her life. She found solace in a Facebook group called Maine Coon Rescue Community, where posts from various shelters and SPCAs were shared. While she had been keeping an eye on different rescue posts for some time, many of them were too far away for her to consider adopting from.
Then, one day, she came across a post about a cat named King (Bazooka) who was being moved from Davidson County Animal Shelter to the Wake County SPCA, which was in her state and close to where she lived. Upon seeing a photo of King being held by a young woman, Robin felt an instant connection. She could see the precious look on his face and immediately knew they were meant to be together. Robin also felt a kinship with him due to their shared redhead status. Without hesitation, she rushed to the SPCA to fill out the necessary paperwork.
When Robin arrived at the SPCA, King was still on his way there and hadn’t been entered into the computer system yet. Despite this, Robin was determined to adopt him, and by the end of the adoption process, she was first in line to take him home. She was overjoyed to finally bring Augustus, who she now knew was the perfect match for her, into her life.
