Encountering Bazooka: A Portly Cat’s Transformation After Crossing Paths with a Marathon Enthusiast

Introducing the adorable and round cat, Bazooka! A sweet orange tabby who is five years old. Sadly, Bazooka ended up in a shelter after his elderly owner passed away. The owner had dementia, which caused him to forget when he last fed Bazooka, leading him to constantly keep his food bowl full. As a result, Bazooka now weighs over 35 pounds (approximately 16 kilograms)! It’s quite a hefty size for a feline, but we can’t blame the previous owner. He was simply doing his best to care for and show love to Bazooka. Social media links: Facebook, Instagram, Facebook Fan Page.

Upon his arrival at the shelter, the chubby feline required extensive medical attention. His sheer size prompted two employees to assist him in, a sight that left them astonished. This plump kitty had a long road ahead towards shedding those extra pounds to regain good health, happiness, and the ability to engage in all the typical feline activities.

Bazooka was on his way to a fresh start with a dedicated foster family who would look after his well-being and assist him in shedding those extra pounds. A heartwarming video captures his attempts to conquer the stairs, a feat he eventually accomplished with the encouragement of his foster parents. Through their love and guidance, Bazooka embraced his new healthy routine and began to see progress in his weight loss journey.

After making a full recovery, Bazooka was all set to join his new forever family. The moment his new owner laid eyes on the lovable cat, it was love at first sight! The scene was absolutely heartwarming. Before long, Bazooka was given a new name that suited his regal presence perfectly—King Augustus (inspired by a Roman leader and first emperor of the Roman Empire).

When inquired about the progress of the cat and if he has started to shed some weight, she mentioned, “It’s only been 2 days since he came home with us, so no weight loss yet. When he was weighed at the Vet’s office on Monday, he had actually gained a bit, now weighing 36.4lbs. His next vet appointment is scheduled for February 14th.”

When questioned about the most challenging aspect of looking after King Augustus, the owner jokingly replied, “The most difficult part is trying to lift him and getting his crate/him into the car. It’s a real workout for my arms!”

Robin is a fitness enthusiast who shared her inspiring journey to staying healthy. She started long-distance running and completed her first marathon last November. Five years ago, she was diagnosed with diabetes and decided to lose 127 lbs that she had gained while on steroids for a skin condition. Thanks to her weight loss, her A1C levels improved from 9 to 4.3, and she is no longer diabetic.

She now runs twice a week at 4:30 am, covering 4-5 miles each time, and on weekends, she averages 8-16 miles. Robin recently ran a half-marathon and has 30 more races planned for the year. She is even thinking of getting her dog, King, a harness so they can enjoy walks together. Let’s all get moving and stay active like Robin!

The owner mentioned that Augustus is still settling in at his new home and they are gradually introducing him to the rest of the family, including their 10-pound dog. Robin described Augustus as a cuddly pet who enjoys belly rubs, and she is eagerly anticipating the day when he feels completely at ease in her household. She also remarked that one of her favorite things about Augustus is his purr, which she jokingly compared to being louder than a Ford F-150.

Robin shared how she came across Augustus and the quick decision she made to bring him into her home after her beloved Maine Coon cat, Whisky, passed away. While browsing through the Maine Coon Rescue Community Facebook group, she spotted a post about a cat named King (Bazooka) being moved to the Wake County SPCA in North Carolina. Seeing his picture and feeling an instant connection, Robin rushed to fill out the adoption paperwork without hesitation. Despite Augustus not being fully processed in the system yet, Robin secured her spot as his new owner. It was a fated match, and Robin couldn’t be more thrilled with her new companion.

They are still in the process of bonding, but we’re optimistic that soon they’ll form a loving and happy family. King Augustus is on the road to recovery and we hope he will thrive in his wonderful new environment. Let’s all send our best wishes to Augustus for a bright future filled with joy and contentment!
