My adorable black rescue cat, Willow, has accompanied me on an epic journey across Australia, covering over 50,000 kilometers in a campervan. Since our departure from Hobart, Tasmania in May 2015, I’ve taken on the roles of chauffeur, cuddle provider, and snack time attendant for Willow, who has been my loyal companion throughout this unforgettable adventure.
Before embarking on this trip of a lifetime, I made the decision to sell my house, belongings, and quit my job. However, saying goodbye to Willow was out of the question, so she joined me on this incredible journey. In February 2017, we reached South Australia, marking Willow’s achievement of visiting all 6 states and 2 territories of Australia – a feat known in Aussie adventure cat circles as a “Purrfect Eight.”
Together, we’ve explored diverse landscapes, from sailing the Great Barrier Reef to camping in mountains, and traversing endless kilometers of gravel roads from Bourketown in Queensland to the Northern Territory. While some may find it unusual to travel with a cat, Willow has adapted seamlessly to our new lifestyle, always eager to explore her surroundings. Equipped with a tracking collar, I can ensure her safety and quickly locate her if she strays too far.
Sharing our adventures with the world has brought immense joy, and the positive feedback from our followers keeps us motivated to continue. As we approach our home state, the idea of settling down is far from our minds. Embracing the nomadic lifestyle, we find contentment in exploring forests and beaches, taking each day as it comes. Willow has transformed my van into a home, and Australia into her playground – truly the best travel companion I could have asked for.
Our journey is chronicled on vancatmeow.com, Instagram, and Facebook, where you can follow our daily escapades. Willow and I have formed an unbreakable bond on the road, choosing happiness and adventure as our guiding principles. Cheers to my amazing travel buddy, Willow – the feline who has turned a van into a home and Australia into her vast backyard.
We’ve already journeyed over 50,000 kilometers side by side.
In May 2015, we said goodbye to our beloved city of Hobart, located in Tasmania.

I decided to embark on the journey of a lifetime by selling my house, getting rid of all my belongings, and leaving my job behind.
However, there was one thing I couldn’t bear to part with – this tiny cat. So, it was clear that I had to bring her along with me.
In February 2017, we were thrilled to finally reach South Australia, as it meant Willow had officially visited all 6 states and 2 territories of Australia!
We have explored the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef, set up camp in the mountains, and journeyed across vast stretches of gravel roads starting from Bourketown in Queensland and continuing all the way up to the Northern Territory.
I know some folks find it unusual that I take my cat along on my journeys, but Willow is surprisingly relaxed and truly enjoys our adventurous lifestyle.
I use a tracking collar to ensure Willow’s safety and always keep tabs on her whereabouts.
Having the tracking collar gives me reassurance that if she decides to wander off for a stroll, I can quickly locate her.
She enjoys her freedom without the leash, constantly eager to roam and investigate the area surrounding our campsite.
We’ve embraced the nomadic lifestyle and it has become our norm. It’s all about choosing what brings you joy in this world, and as long as we’re still loving the journey, why hit the brakes?
We are fully immersed in the travel lifestyle, spending our time exploring forests and beaches, taking in all the beauty around us.
We have accomplished a lot together and visited some incredible destinations. I can’t picture going on this journey without her beside me.
